“It is worth noting that it was originally the British who tried to generate Turkish interest over Cyprus and not the other way round.”

Robert Holland “Britain and the Revolt in Cyprus 1954-1959”

The UK currently maintains 99 square miles of sovereign military bases in Cyprus and is the main proponent of unconditional acceptance of Turkey to the EU. The current ambassador of the UK in Cyprus Mr. Millet

· is very active in pressuring the Cypriot president to accept a
settlement that will essentially legalize the occupational status
quo and will alleviate Turkey from all responsibility.
· has uncovered a monument of the English casualties during the
1955 -59 uprising. This monument was erected in the occupied town
of Kyrenia and no permit was asked from the legal government of
Cyprus. Representatives of the illegal regime of the occupied areas
were present at the ceremony.

In a recent letter to President Demetris Christofias, the Prime Minister of the UK avoids referring to him as President of the Republic. On the contrary, while calling the President “his friend”, he refers to Mr. Talat (the so-called president of the regime in the occupied areas) as the “counterpart” of the president. This, in essence, is recognition of the regime of the occupied areas as a state with a president, counterpart of President Christofias.

A country whose government portrays such behavior should have no place in a European Union where every member is expected to respect human rights.
