“It is worth noting that it was originally the British who tried to generate Turkish interest over Cyprus and not the other way round.” |

A one-time Secretary to the Board of Control in India, Thomas Macaulay, said in 1835: |
"I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace the old and ancient education system, her culture, because if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native self-culture and they will become what we want them to be, a truly dominated nation." |
This is a very revealing statement of the intentions of the British. Despite the fact that the UK is no longer an empire and hardly a great power the above attitude survives. |
Cyprus is the only European country that has the experience of British colonial rule. Like all other former British colonies it has suffered and is still suffering from the results of “divide and rule”. |
In mid-1950 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Ali Fouat Kuprulu was stating: “For Turkey there does not exist any Cyprus issue” (Fahir Armaoglou “The Cyprus Problem 1954-1959: The Turkish Government and the attitudes of Public Opinion” - Ankara 1963.) |
The intricate manipulations of the English in that period can be found on pages 210 to 213 of “BLOODY TRUTH” issued by The Movement of Freedom and Justice for Cyprus. |
